Overview

Employment Search Influence

Your cover letter could determine whether you secure a job interview or see your resume overlooked, making it crucial to invest the proper time and effort into creating one. It serves as an excellent opportunity to display your character, highlight what distinguishes you as an applicant, and genuinely engage with potential employers.

Consider this your preview to your resume’s main feature! It’s your chance to capture the employer’s interest, demonstrate your enthusiasm for joining their organization, and share a narrative about your qualifications for the position and how you can contribute value.

A cover letter is essential:

(1) When the job posting requires a cover letter

(2) When the employer, hiring manager, or talent acquisition specialist asks for one

(3) When you’re reaching out directly to an individual whose name you know

(4) When someone has recommended you for the opportunity.

Nevertheless, cover letters aren’t always required. For instance, you might skip a cover letter when submitting applications online. Some recruitment tracking platforms don’t permit candidates to include them. When that occurs, you don’t need to be concerned. In every other situation? Definitely you should include one!

Cover Letter Instructions

A compelling cover letter follows a clear structure that tells your professional story while directly addressing the employer’s needs. Here’s how to craft each section:

Header and Salutation Include your contact information at the top, followed by the date and employer’s details. Always address your letter to a specific person when possible – research the hiring manager’s name on LinkedIn or the company website. Use “Dear [Name]” rather than generic greetings.

Opening Paragraph Hook the reader immediately by stating the specific position you’re applying for and briefly mentioning your most relevant qualification or connection to the company. For example: “As a marketing graduate with internship experience at tech startups, I’m excited to apply for the Digital Marketing Coordinator position at InnovateTech.”

Body Paragraphs (1-2 paragraphs) This is where you shine. Connect your experiences directly to the job requirements using specific examples and quantifiable achievements. Don’t simply repeat your resume – instead, tell the story behind your accomplishments. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your examples and show how you’ve solved similar challenges the employer faces.

Closing Paragraph Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role and company, mention any next steps (like your availability for interviews), and include a professional sign-off. End with “Sincerely” or “Best regards” followed by your name.

Assess Your Cover Letter From The Hiring Manager’s Perspective

While developing your letter, it’s beneficial to step back and conduct a final review through the hiring manager’s and employer’s viewpoint:

• Have I articulated what makes this organization distinctive from others? How are they exceptional? (your investigation and networking with the company can truly help demonstrate this!)

• Have I illustrated how I match their culture, mission and principles? (considering both the company standards and applicant requirements)

• Have I shown what makes me distinctive as an applicant and how I can add value to the organization?

• Are my accomplishments that I’ve emphasized pertinent to the job requirements? And have I utilized STAR examples (Situation | Task | Action | Result) to showcase this and quantified wherever possible!

• Have I incorporated a request for action, asking for the chance to interview?

• Have I carefully proofread and requested feedback? Feel free to submit your Cover Letter to your Career Counselor for evaluation, together with the job posting link
