ESL Entrance Requirements

Without exception, all students who wish to register for any English as a Second Language course will be assessed through the College Board's Accuplacer ESL battery of tests. The ESL placement exam will evaluate the student's proficiency in reading, language use, sentence meaning, and listening. The resulting range of scores will determine the ESL placement level for each individual.

The assessment acquired from the Accuplacer ESL placement exam is relatively similar to that obtained for students interested in pursuing academic associate degrees. While the latter will evaluate the student's ability both in English and mathematics, the former will ascertain the individual's proficiency in four distinct language skills. Nevertheless, in terms of final placement outcomes, both exams are the result of comprehensive and objective assessments that allow for greater levels of accuracy and effectiveness.

Completion of the ESL Program:

Upon successful completion of each level, the student will receive a Certificate of Completion, a Document of Attendance for the level and 12.5 Semester Credit Units.
