This week we have unanimously voted to give our California Miramar University Small Business Spotlight Award to the San Diego Armed Forces YMCA, and it wasn’t a hard decision to make. The hardest part about this is trying to condense their remarkable services for our Armed Forces in just one blog post. Founded in 1920, they are San Diego’s oldest and largest non-profit organization dedicated to easing the strains of military life for active duty military personnel and military families.
With over 40 programs focused on family bonding and support, helping the children of military families and strong social networking, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA helps over 9,000 active duty military servicemen and women and their families in San Diego every month. An exceptional organization, their steadfast and unwavering dedication in helping our troops has had and continues to have a very positive impact on the San Diego military community.
For servicemen and women that have been injured in training or combat or have fallen ill, they make it a priority to make life as easy and comfortable as possible. By fulfilling requests of patients in hospitals (i.e. bringing them books, video games, hobby project materials, toiletries, music and even just having someone show up to hang out and play some board games), their reach extends far beyond their main office.
For military families, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA Family Outreach Department offers in-home counseling for free. With everything from marriage counseling and personal counseling to educating parents on raising their kids and providing emergency supplies to families that are struggling financially, their support for military families is unparalleled.
For the children of military families – who are very vulnerable at such a young age because of constant change, having to move to different cities and complex family dynamics – their Youth and Community Outreach Department offers myriad programs aimed at helping military spouses and children.
Operation Kid Comfort is a program where volunteers make quilts for children ages 0-17, and has made over 4,000 quilts to date.
The Mom & Tots Program helps foster child development, family bonding and provides a support network for parents.
Operation Hero is a free after school program for children with either low confidence and self-esteem or those who have had a tough time adjusting to military life.
Camp Hero is a weeklong camp coming up from August 7-12 helping kids cope with the difficulties of military life while traveling to some beautiful San Diego parks and helping kids connect with each other.
Craft & Conversation Group is a weekly event where military spouses can connect with each other and discuss the struggles they’re facing. They also have a Kids Club to give military spouses the time and space they need to make this possible.
This is a look at some of the programs they offer, but just some; remember, they offer over 40 in sum. Their extensive volunteer network and dedication to not just active duty military servicemen and women, but also military spouses and children has created a palpable positive impact on the San Diego military community and we at California Miramar University are so proud of what they continue to accomplish.
We’ve gone to great lengths to support our troops and military families as well, as we are approved by the US Department of Veterans Affairs to offer GI educational benefits, offer Tuition Assistance. Planning for the future is a complex problem that must involve both you and your spouse. And it must take into consideration a whole variety of issues.
As a starting point, think about things that could go wrong. Almost everyone will have something pop up that is completely out of the blue. Taking those events into consideration involves some commonplace items.
Set up a savings account and put a little away every pay period. Perhaps start an investment strategy with a program that allows you to buy in small quantities.

This year employers expect to hire 17.4% new MBAs, up from 11.7% in 2011 according to the Graduate Management Admission Council’s (GMAC) 2012 Survey of Corporate Recruiters. And are overwhelmingly interested in hiring MBA candidates that have recently graduated and are ready to put their new degree to use. Because many graduates of online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs have gained work experience during business school, they have had the benefit of applying their studies to their jobs and now have the confidence to really advance their careers.

BUSINESS MODEL
Their name sums up their services quite well. Square Peg designs, manages (via supply chain), and distributes packaging materials for myriad businesses. Basically, they’re all about branding, and they do a very good job in their specialty. But what makes them stand out from other companies who do the same thing?
First, they recognized that businesses were wasting time, money and brand continuity by going to multiple vendors for their printing and packaging needs. By creating a business model and hiring innovative minds that specialize in both aspects however, they were able to include all services under their umbrella and enables companies to get everything done from the same people. This not only ensures that the business’ vision and message is consistent throughout all of their products, but it also saves businesses money because they are only going to one vendor instead of two or more, makes businesses money because their brand identity is uniform throughout and thereby stronger/more recognizable, and enables businesses to focus more on their operations and ultimately generate more revenue.
Second, they don’t just stop there. They also offer business analysis consulting that includes industry research, sales strategy, marketing plan (like establishing an online presence and everything involved in branding), and product positioning in the market. But Square Peg doesn’t just stop there like most consultants; they will also execute everything – and very successfully – if their clients wants them to. So not only do they offer a unique service in the industry; they’ve also gone five steps beyond and have incorporated business analysis, strategy and execution as services as well.
BUSINESS GROWTH
This innovative approach to printing and packaging has done wonders for their success over the past 5 years. When they were founded in 2007, they were a smaller operation and pulled in a revenue of $122,030, according to Inc.com. However, as they increased their scope and expanded their services, their revenue did the same. Just 3 years later in 2010, they pulled in $7.4 million, a whopping 5986% 3-year growth that earned them the #34 spot on Inc.’s 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies in the US. Now that is impressive.
So now you see why we were very impressed with Square Peg Packaging and Printing and decided to award them with the CalMU Small Business Spotlight. They are a great example for students in our Hybrid MBA and online MBA programs and Leadership programs to find what’s missing, develop a unique strategy to fill the void, and then go the extra mile to set your businesses up as the one-stop destination for everything in your niche.

Okay, let’s build your mobile site. How exciting! You’re going to love this. This is an stuff; it’s kind of fun, too. There’s a couple of things that we need to do before we built our site, and it’s this pre-site building phase that’s going to make it really easy for you to built your site.
The worst thing that you can do in building a website – and this really applies whether it’s Internet or mobile – but the worst thing that you can do is just jump into a builder and let the builder guide you. Because every time it asks for something you go, “Oh My God” ‘cause it’ll say, you know, write a paragraph about yourself; what’s your address?; what’s your product?; you can put a picture here – and you’re thinking, “Oh God I got to go get Dan.” It’s just like, it just drives you nuts.
If you prepare upfront the material that you will enter into your builder, then the building process goes like a snap, it’s really cool and fun, and it won’t take you but about a half hour to get this thing up and running.
Here’s what you need to do in order to built a mobile site that’s going to be of interest to a person that’s on the go. You have to determine what are your mobile magnets. What are the things that would attract a person, cause them to want to go to your mobile page or your mobile site. You’ve got to figure that part out. If you don’t have something that’s of interest to that mobile person, there isn’t a reason to build a site. You just got to figure that part out first.
Mobile coupons are hugely popular, hugely popular. So that’s a real easy thing to do. In other words you’re thinking, “Well nothing I do, Dan, is mobile. I mean like, I’m a landscaper.” Well actually there’s a ton of things that landscapers could do that would interest their customers on the mobile phone, but at the top of the list is going to be a mobile coupon. In other words: opt in to our list and we’ll give you a discount on our service or a discount on our product and you don’t have to go do anything special; it’s not like you have to actually make a coupon or get a designer or go to a coupon site. Really all you do is you send them a text message that says’ Show us this text messaging and get 10% of your next, you know, whatever’.
Education, including an online business degreeof course, is often pursued with the goal of getting a job and climbing through the ranks. With time though, you want to own yourself by running your own show. Don’t get me wrong; entrepreneurship is very difficult and is not for everyone. But with determination, vision and continuous hard work you can turn your dreams into reality. And at the end of the day, there’s nothing better than answering to nobody else but yourself.
You can make your mark.
Behind every successful enterprise is an entrepreneur who is willing to take a chance on their idea. Your too can make your mark and truly change the world in whatever way you want. How exciting is that?!

Even the top brass of a company are answerable to its owner and/or board directors. As a business owner, you make all the decisions and get to do things the way you think is best. Your ideas do not get turned down, stolen or distorted, and you can shape and mold your business and daily operations how you see fit.
You can wear different hats as you run your business.
As a business owner you have to deal with everything and everyone from procurement, supply and delivery,to marketing, the staff and countless other aspects of your business.
