CalMU Small Business Spotlight: San Diego Armed Services YMCA

July 25th, 2012 No comments

This week we have unanimously voted to give our California Miramar University Small Business Spotlight Award to the San Diego Armed Forces YMCA, and it wasn’t a hard decision to make. The hardest part about this is trying to condense their remarkable services for our Armed Forces in just one blog post. Founded in 1920, they are San Diego’s oldest and largest non-profit organization dedicated to easing the strains of military life for active duty military personnel and military families.

With over 40 programs focused on family bonding and support, helping the children of military families and strong social networking, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA helps over 9,000 active duty military servicemen and women and their families in San Diego every month. An exceptional organization, their steadfast and unwavering dedication in helping our troops has had and continues to have a very positive impact on the San Diego military community.

For servicemen and women that have been injured in training or combat or have fallen ill, they make it a priority to make life as easy and comfortable as possible. By fulfilling requests of patients in hospitals (i.e. bringing them books, video games, hobby project materials, toiletries, music and even just having someone show up to hang out and play some board games), their reach extends far beyond their main office.

For military families, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA Family Outreach Department offers in-home counseling for free. With everything from marriage counseling and personal counseling to educating parents on raising their kids and providing emergency supplies to families that are struggling financially, their support for military families is unparalleled.

For the children of military families – who are very vulnerable at such a young age because of constant change, having to move to different cities and complex family dynamics – their Youth and Community Outreach Department offers myriad programs aimed at helping military spouses and children.

  • Operation Kid Comfort is a program where volunteers make quilts for children ages 0-17, and has made over 4,000 quilts to date.
  • The Mom & Tots Program helps foster child development, family bonding and provides a support network for parents.
  • Operation Hero is a free after school program for children with either low confidence and self-esteem or those who have had a tough time adjusting to military life.
  • Camp Hero is a weeklong camp coming up from August 7-12 helping kids cope with the difficulties of military life while traveling to some beautiful San Diego parks and helping kids connect with each other.
  • Craft & Conversation Group is a weekly event where military spouses can connect with each other and discuss the struggles they’re facing. They also have a Kids Club to give military spouses the time and space they need to make this possible.

This is a look at some of the programs they offer, but just some; remember, they offer over 40 in sum. Their extensive volunteer network and dedication to not just active duty military servicemen and women, but also military spouses and children has created a palpable positive impact on the San Diego military community and we at California Miramar University are so proud of what they continue to accomplish.

We’ve gone to great lengths to support our troops and military families as well, as we are approved by the US Department of Veterans Affairs to offer GI educational benefits, offer Tuition Assistance. Our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs are ideal for military servicemen and women, Veterans and military spouses to be able to earn an online business degree from wherever they are in the world, and be able to do so for a very affordable price.

That aside, however, we are so proud of our troops and their families and it is organizations like this that set the standard for military family bonding and outreach programs, and really highlights the importance of caring for our servicemen and women. Thanks you San Diego Armed Services YMCA for being such a role model and conduit for support for our troops. You are what makes San Diego such a wonderful place!

CalMU Small Business Spotlight: USO San Diego

July 18th, 2012 No comments

“There are some who’ve forgotten why we have a military. It’s not to promote war; it’s to be prepared for peace,” said President Ronald Reagan. Keeping this great notion in mind, we at California Miramar University have identified San Diego’s own USO San Diego for this week’s CalMU Small Business Spotlight Award.

They are dedicated to improving the life of US Armed Forces personnel and their families, having done so since 1941. They provide a sense of comfort in unfamiliar places to all Active Duty Military servicemen and women and their families. USO San Diego focuses on ensuring American Military men and women feel at home in San Diego and provide them with a sense of psychological and emotional security and stability. They are a non-profit organization with no government funding, but still do everything in their power to make our national heroes feel truly at home. With over 250 volunteers that help this great cause, they’ve been able totouch the lives of about 150,000 patrons every year.

They have 2 centers in San Diego: one is downtown and the other is their Neil Ash Airport Center. Their Downtown Center is the community chest, which accepts tax deductible donations. It is also the ticket distribution point that offers tickets to local sporting events, the theatre and other entertainment shows. The Neil Ash Airport Center, on the other hand, is the host location for new recruits and deploying units, and is the place where the homecoming takes place for Military men and women whose family was not able to greet them at the airport.

According to the USO, attendance at their Downtown Center is up by about 20%, owing much to economic constraints. About 300 people eat free dinners every Tuesdays. And aside from providing tickets to local events, they also facilitate the United Through Reading program, which enables deployed Military parents to be video-recorded and read stories aloud to their children, key in helping Military families with the separation of service. They hold special events for Easter, Mothers Day and Father’s Day, and host Halloween carnivals and Christmas gifts by Santa, just to name a few.

USO San Diego is a truly remarkable organization and is one of the reasons support for our troops is so important. They work to make life and separation easier for those who dedicate their lives to our country. We at California Miramar University are inspired by and very grateful to our troops, which is why we are VA Approved to offer GI Bill educational benefits, accept Military Tuition Assistance and offer a 50% Tuition discount to Military spouses. Our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs are perfect for Military families, as they’re both reputed and ensure that you can complete your MBA degree from wherever you are in the world.

USO San Diego – thank you for being such a positive and helpful force in the Military support community!

Online MBA Programs: Freedom From Regular Classes

July 13th, 2012 No comments

Are you interested in pursuing an MBA degree, but you don’t have much free time due to a busy work schedule? If that is the case for you then an online business degree may be the path for you. Online MBA programs are an excellent alternative for those wishing to pursue a degree without the luxury of free time. Online business degrees and Hybrid MBA programs are becoming much more popular due to the number of benefits that they offer.

Hybrid MBA programs are now available for those interested in online programs, but still would like to sit in a classroom atmosphere from time to time. These classes typically have one day a week of classroom meeting, and all the rest is done online. This is a great advantage for those who may have any questions that they feel cannot be answered online. Hybrid MBA programs are excellent for people who have a few days off during the week allowing them to have a day for the classroom lessons.

For those of you who feel comfortable with strictly online classes, there are online MBA programs that would be ideal for you. This allows you to take classes even with the busiest of schedules due to the fact that you can sign on anywhere, as long as you have computer capabilities and reliable Internet access. Whether you feel comfortable learning in your local coffee shop or prefer the comforts of your own home; you are able to take your classes from any of them.

You can work around your schedule and make time to take your classes. If you need to go out of town for any reason at all, as long as you have your computer with you and Internet access, you’re good to go. Your budget will also not have to be as high due to having no transportation and commuting costs to get in the way, as well as lower tuition costs for online programs as opposed to on-campus ones. Online MBA programs are an excellent alternative to traditional college program classes that will benefit you in many ways.

2012 MBA Graduates Embraced By Welcoming Employers

July 9th, 2012 No comments

This year employers expect to hire 17.4% new MBAs, up from 11.7% in 2011 according to the Graduate Management Admission Council’s (GMAC) 2012 Survey of Corporate Recruiters. And are overwhelmingly interested in hiring MBA candidates that have recently graduated and are ready to put their new degree to use. Because many graduates of online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs have gained work experience during business school, they have had the benefit of applying their studies to their jobs and now have the confidence to really advance their careers.

MBA programs give you an advantage in both your personal and career development. You learn invaluable leadership skills as you fulfill course requirements, like group projects and presentations, which are meant to mimic real business situations. A second strong advantage to a traditional, hybrid or online business degree is the business connections and relationships you form with classmates and professors. Alumni networks from business schools help you build your career by offering services that aid in relocating if necessary, or give advice on a corporation’s strengths when you are on the job market or looking to change positions.

With an online MBA, however, you will likely be recruited while still in school at a salary that averages $90,000 per annum upon graduation, depending on location. With students who chose a specialty, job offer opportunities are slightly higher, as are those in manufacturing. Further, if you are interested in pursuing a career in either the services or products sector you may earn an impressive 75% higher salary than your fellow graduates.

If you are still working full-time, then the online MBA programs or Hybrid MBA programs are definitely great options that allow you to take advantage of the freedom they entail. The costs overall are less than traditional MBA programs; but the important aspects of MBA training, like group work, are included via online technologies like video chatting and/or conference calls. You will keep in close contact with professors and classmates, ensuring that you continue to reap all of the benefits of traditional programs, while gaining the valuable work experience to really propel yourself into the upper echelon of whatever career path you embark on.

CalMU Small Business Spotlight: Stone Brewing Co.

June 27th, 2012 No comments

Summer is here! And there’s nothing more fit than to give this week’s CalMU Small Business Spotlight Award to San Diego’s own Stone Brewing Co. They have a long and very interesting story, which started at a music rehearsal studio, moved to a weekend class on the “Sensory Evaluation of Beer” and finally ended up at the establishment of Stone Brewing Co. It is the brainchild of beer-lover and business guru Greg Koch (CEO and co-founder) and beer-enthusiast and master brewer Steve Wagner (President and co-founder).

Greg and Steve met in 1989 in Los Angeles and shared their love for beer. They kept in touch and finally realized they wanted to open their own brewery. Based on Steve’s knowledge in brewery and Greg’s past success in business, they managed to convince some private investors to invest in their project to start a brewery, and on July 26, 1996, the first beer was tapped in the brewery’s tasting room. Their journey soon took off with the production and variety and quality. They are now a thriving craft brewery in the U.S., with 18 beers on tap at all times – more than enough to satisfy the taste buds of even the more nuanced beer aficionados.

They have achieved remarkable milestones in the brewery industry. They have been named one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies by the San Diego Business Journal seven years in a row, and have achieved an annual average growth rate of 43% for the past 15 years. Stone’s revenue has grown by a tremendous 1500% in the last decade. According to Inc.com, their 2002 revenue was $4 million with 41 employees, whereas now their revenue stands at $83 million with 465 employees. Very impressive, to say the least.

Not only dominating the American beer scene, they also are international in scope and distribute their beer and wine to 36 states (plus Washington, DC) and their exports reach as far as the U.K., Sweden, Japan and Singapore.

They are now the 11th largest craft brewery in the nation, and I’m sure you’ve tasted some of their extraordinarily delicious craft brews while out on the town. They have earned many awards and recognitions, including Brewery of the Year and All-time Top Brewery on Planet Earth. Stone also holds honors as America’s Top Brewery Tour and CEO Greg Koch has been knighted by the Belgian Brewers Federation and was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. They have won many Great American Beer Festival medals and have also participated in many Environmental, Sustainable and Philanthropic campaigns. Also recognizing the need to give back to the community, they have also donated millions to charities to help spur social development.

Because of their hard work and continued innovation in the craft beer industry, they are a great role model for students in our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs. Stone Brewing Co., we wish you nothing but continued success in the future and thank you for livening our taste buds when out on a beautiful San Diego night!

Top Summer Activities in San Diego

June 15th, 2012 No comments

Do you hear that? Yep, it’s the wonderful sound of summer in San Diego! The food tastes better, the ocean is warmer, the city is more relaxed and it’s time for all of us to put on our exploration caps and try new things around the city. From San Diego’s 70 mile expanse of gorgeous beaches to its more secluded natural landmarks, there is so much to do and so much to see, making summer time in San Diego a top destination in the U.S.

So to get your creative juices flowing, here are some of the top activities to indulge in San Diego this summer.

San Diego County Fair

It opened last week and running until July 4, this year’s San Diego County Fair is truly an out of this world experience. With its interstellar theme this year, the fair will be hosting several international musical artists, including Switchfoot, Joan Sebastian, Hot Chelle Rae, Grand Funk Railroad, Credence Clearwater Revisited, KC and the Sunshine Band, Train, Matisyahu and Weird Al Yankovic.

Other exiting events include the International Beer Festival, Demolition Derby, Southern California’s Best Dance Crew, several prominent comedians, a Monster Truck rally and much more. So head to Del Mar for some great eats, fun rides and a night that is sure to be a blast.

Mission: Beach

No summer is complete without a day spent at the very lively Mission Beach. With some of San Diego’s tastiest gastric staples, miles of beautiful coastline and Sea World nearby, Mission Beach is one of the best summer hangouts in the city. And don’t forget to go to Belmont Park located on the beach boardwalk – the Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster is a must ride!

Knott’s Soak City Water Park

While the beaches are beautiful and the waves fun to board, sometimes you just need to feel the rush of adrenaline that amusement parks can provide. And during the summer, what better amusement park is there than a water park?! Cool off from the hot San Diego sun and enjoy a day rushing down water slides and relaxing in the lazy Sunset River.

No San Diego Summer is Complete Without La Jolla

La Jolla is undeniably one of San Diego’s most picturesque and relaxing locations, with a beach town rustic vibe that is seriously too good to be true. Whether it’s strolling the town for some shopping and eating, or hiking the gorgeous Razor Point and Yucca Point Trails at Torrey Pines State Reserve, La Jolla is the perfect little getaway that will definitely leave you in a state of complete relaxation.

And you know what makes our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs so great? You can enjoy these activities all year because San Diego is your campus. Head down to the beach, nestle your toes in the warm sand and study for your classes; or head to a beachfront restaurant, enjoy the culinary genius that so many San Diego restaurants provide and make that your learning environment.

Whatever it may be, summers in San Diego are priceless, which is why people from all across the globe come here on vacation every year.

How Do I Finance My College Education?

April 16th, 2012 No comments

One of the things we pride ourselves on is our very affordable tuition. With student loans being a deterrent from some pursuing higher education, we have four ways that we can help you finance your education.

NOTE: And even with our very affordable tuition, online MBA programs are great because they allow you to save money on travel to and from school while enabling you to work during the day and gain that valuable work experience that all employers love. When you add a salary, work experience, affordable tuition, high quality education, experienced and venerated professors, and the ability to study when you want, an online MBA is a great option for all.

Hi, good morning. We’re going to talk about “How do you finance your education for college?” Okay, a few things to keep in mind.

  1. One: at CMU you have the advantage of paying every single month. So instead of having to come up with big lump sum twice a year, you can pay every single month and make it smaller amounts. So that’s one great advantage to paying for your education while you’re a student here at CMU.

  2. Number two: there’s no interest, so whatever the cost of your education is, divide it up, pay it as you go each month, pay it off at the end before you graduate, but there’s no interest. So we as a university finance your education, great advantage to paying for your education when you’re a student here at CMU.

  3. Third point: if you are a Veteran or if you’re current Active duty in the military, we accept the GI Bill and all the benefits that you have. Fantastic benefits with the GI Bill, you can make use of all those at CMU – that’s number three.

  4. Number four: we have a military spouse discount. It’s a 50% discount for all military spouses. It’s a great program, it’s a great option if you’re a military spouse, and that’s reason number four.

So again, the four ways to finance your education at CMU:

  • Pay each month as you go
  • Pay small amounts each month as you go and we finance it
  • Use your GI Bill
  • And a military spouse discount

Finally, a big difference between CMU and many other schools out there, CMU is a very affordable tuition. So why go into debt, why break the bank when you don’t have to?

Quality education at an affordable price. Check out the tuition structure at CMU and glad having you here as a student.

Small Business Insurance: Essential For A Healthy and Thriving Company

March 23rd, 2012 No comments

Starting your own business is one of the most exciting things anyone can ever do, and being able to do it without constantly worrying about risk is very important. Picking up the right small business insurance can make all the difference in the world when something goes wrong. It is very important to know your rights and take advantage of the best policies that are out there; otherwise, your company could find itself liable for a lot of money and compensation that you simply can’t handle. We go over this in our on-campus, Hybrid MBA and online MBA programs, but it is always good to review just how important business insurance is, especially for start ups and entrepreneurs.

Making sure that there is the proper amount of coverage available all depends on the type of business you do, and this is something that has to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If a business owner is unsure of what type of coverage they might need, it is vital that they go ahead and consult with a professional. It might cost a bit but it is worth it.

Taking the time to find insurance for the office will go ahead and cover not only against mistakes made by the business, but in many cases it will also cover against fraud and theft that inevitable comes in many different forms. Making sure that this type of coverage is in place before opening for business can be especially important if the business is in a high-risk environment or field. Business insurance is absolutely vital for a business’ long-term survival in light of all the hazards that are out there, and forgetting this fact can result in some serious trouble for those who experience turbulence during the course of a business’ lifespan.

Making sure that everything is in place before making transactions or even announcing that you are opening is a good idea, and knowing the ins and outs of your particular industry is vital. So be sure to always practice due diligence.

4 Things Every MBA Student Should Be Doing in Social Media Right Now

March 16th, 2012 No comments

Alright folks, there’s a simple truth we all know that has been ceaselessly drilled into our heads, repeated time and time again in an apparent effort to make us as dazed as we are annoyed. Guesses anyone? Anyone? Yep, you got it! Social media is… very… very important for businesses in the world we live in today. Hold on; let me take a step back while you digest that.

Okay I’m done, but there is something to take out of this. Yeah social media is great. Yeah social media never seems to distract us and take away from what we should be doing. But that’s just it. We all participate in social media networking in one form or another and all love that we can bring the far corners of the galaxy into the comfort of our own homes. But for businesses, social networking has become the most quintessential marketing trend in the past few years; and for MBA students – yes that means all of you in traditional, hybrid or online MBA programs – there is a lot more that you should be doing every time you log on.

1. Be social, join the Group. We all Like different Groups on Facebook all the time, but when was the last time you looked at the Group through the Administrator’s eyes? Who are they? What’s their primary objective? What are they doing to accomplish that? These are all questions you should be asking yourself when pressing that good ol’ ‘Like’ button. One of the biggest ways businesses engage and get noticed on Facebook is by participating in Groups, specifically Groups relevant to Influencers and their industry/niche, not necessarily their own. It’s an easy exercise and can really get you clarifying your social business vision every time you log on.

2. Look for the positives in Google+. And the biggest one? Social and search engine optimization. It is, after all Google’s brainchild, and it does, unsurprisingly, appear pretty high in search engine results. Although not many people are using Google+, register for an account, get used to the layout and how it works, and think about different ways you can optimize it for search engines. Pay specific attention to the ‘About’ section (hint: hyperlinks!) and photos (hint: geotag!). Although it will probably never match the Facebook empire, it has its purpose and that, as far as marketers are concerned at least, is to make Google happy.

3. Get Pinterested. It may still be new, but it is booming in popularity because of its easy usability and highly visual format. And while it’s really fun to endlessly scroll down and be bombarded with photos and images from Pinboards that Pinterest us (+10 me), it can serve myriad advantages for businesses when utilized correctly. (And in this case, ‘correctly’ means creatively, which really makes it a fun social network.) So hop on – you still need an invite to register so request one from a friend or request one from the site and wait a little longer – and look at what businesses are doing and how YOU could improve that. What are they missing? What do you and don’t you like about their Pinboard(s)? Simple questions, but very important to get a true business grasp on the emerging platform.

4. Hop on the Blog Bandwagon. I know I wrote a post on this a few weeks back, but now I will focus on blog networking and blog commenting. Find blogs on topics that peak your interest, notice the tone and style of the blogger, and go through what they’re writing a back. Since this is a topic that you’re interested in, are they writing about what you want to read? Or are they boring you with content on social media that you’ve read 10 times before? (Hmmm…) Regardless, start interacting in that blog and communicating with the community. (There’s a joke in there somewhere.) At the end of the day the most successful people in life are passionate about what they do. If you start looking at social media through a business lens about things you’re really interested, heck, maybe you’ve found yourself a career after you graduate.

I’ve only touched on 4 strategies and will get to more later, but for all you on-campus, Hybrid and online MBA students out there, these are simple everyday strategies that can really improve your online business sense. Whether you realize it or not.

“Selling B2B” – Video Clip from MKT 6120: Marketing Management

October 24th, 2011 2 comments

Many business people miss out on the opportunity to sell other business. Here’s a short video clip on “Selling Business-to-Business” from MKT 6120: Marketing Management. Find out how to avoid this pitfall. This course provides a strategic framework for organizational marketing decisions. From this managerial perspective, the student will explore the marketing process, concepts and customer-focused processes. The course also analyzes marketing tools to understand their importance to managers. These tools include the incorporation of market research, competitor analysis and consumer analysis.

It’s taught by Dr. Tim Becker. Dr. Becker holds a B.A. in German from Luther College, an M.B.A. from University of North Texas and a D.B.A. from United States International University. His research interests and teaching specialization include marketing and global management.

Stay tuned for next week’s MBA Mondays video lecture: “Corporate Social Responsibility” from MGT 6190: Strategic Marketing Capstone.

Transcript of the Video Lecture from MGT 6120: Marketing Management

Let’s take a look at businesses. Business-to-business. You know what, this is a great opportunity. Most people think about selling and producing products to consumers. Well that’s a good market and, you know, the consumers actually in the United States drive about 70% of the economic value of the economy. But ultimately, if you really want to look for opportunities in the future, let us try to figure out how you can get into and service what’s called the B-to-B, the B number 2 B, world. Business-to-business, there’s tremendous opportunities there. And what you want to take a look at is, whose businesses?

Businesses are companies that you are involved in yourself or it could be big companies, small companies. It could be the government that’s considered a business, or falls into this category. Same thing with institutions. Maybe you are dealing with schools, hospitals and so on. So what are they buying or selling? So what does a hospital sell to another business or what products or services do you maybe want to sell to a hospital? Obviously if you are 3M, you are selling tapes, and bandages and the like to hospital chains. That’s a business-to-business purchase. If you are into computers, or projectors for example, you may be selling that from a company over to another company.

Big difference, and a few of the things you want to take a look at here are businesses that are buying products from another business; they are looking for several things. They are looking for high quality and also good service. Price isn’t the number one thing; they are looking to see out of this product or service, are they getting the results that they’re looking for?

“Market Research” – Video Clip from MKT 6120

October 10th, 2011 9 comments

This is a short video clip from a lesson on Market Research, which is taught in our MKT 6120: Marketing Management online MBA program. This course offers a combination of marketing principles and marketing management within a study of the relationship between the marketing mix, the changing business environment and the overall corporate strategy.

It’s taught by Dr. Tim Becker. Dr. Becker holds a B.A. in German from Luther College, an M.B.A. from University of North Texas and a D.B.A. from United States International University. His research interests and teaching specialization include marketing and global management.

Stay tuned for more video lessons every week as part of our new MBA Mondays blog section!

Transcript of the Lesson

Hello. Welcome back! All right, today we are going to take a look at the Market Research. When I say market research, Oh my Gosh! That is research, we are not getting into it, and we really appreciate the value. Let’s go back for just a second and take a look at what’s the function of a business and what is marketing all about? It is to get, serve and keep customers that are profit repeatedly. That’s what we’re in the business to do.

Now, so remember we have the buyers and the sellers. The buyers have the money and they are giving that to the seller in exchange for a product, service or idea they are looking for. Wonderful! Alright.

So what products are out there? What customers to go after? What’s the nature of the product? What’s the timing? You need information. Well that we do about Market Research, that’s why we do it. We try to get information so then you can decide on what products, what services, and so on. So let’s take a look at, while the textbook goes through some processes – we’re going to discuss those – but what are we really looking for? Why are we doing research? I like to take a different look at it, prospective at it, and the only reason we do market research is to make decisions. Okay, so make a choice. So you as a marketer, you are trying to figure out ultimately which customers to sell to; what prices to price the product at; what distribution systems do you want to use? Do we truck it? Do we airplane it? Whatever.

So those are your decisions. Okay, so the best thing with Market Research is to anticipate decisions and figure out ahead of time, what decisions are you going to have to make in future? Whether or not it’s in a few weeks, a few months, whatever – but identify the decision, then come back and do as the book says, the various steps of research, indeed recognition and so on, where you analyze what you need or you decide what to get, go out and get it, analyze it and then report it and actually ultimately implement it. But the very first thing, the guiding force should be what decisions you have to make because that’ll then help you to decide what information to get. Because you may have to decide how much to price the product at and you may not need to know about the demographics of the customer, or the distribution system.

That’s up to you. So, ultimately the first step of research is to decide which decisions you have to make.

Putting the ‘Master’ Back in MBA

September 26th, 2011 7 comments

A Master of Business Administration, or MBA, is becoming an increasingly hot commodity right now in the business world. According to a recent study by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), MBA graduates are currently seeing many benefits come their way. More than half of all graduates this year (54%) are getting jobs right after they get their diplomas, up 22% from last year. Additionally, MBA grads are enjoying higher salaries after they get their degrees, with a 73% remuneration increase in their post-degree job compared to what they were making before getting their diploma. It seems that for MBA holders, 2011 is the start of something big: a significant shift to more opportunities.

So how many businesses actually hire an MBA graduates? According to the same GMAC research, job offers are also up to an average of 2.0, up from 1.7 a year ago. 67% of employers who were surveyed also stated that they planned to hire new MBAs in the upcoming year, further highlighting the wealth of benefits that are pouring in to those who have their Master’s.

Now, with rapid changes in the global market, most financial, technological, managerial and consulting firms need many MBA graduates to handle the demands of the global marketplace. As companies continue to widen their scope and develop customer bases overseas, MBA students with unique specializations have catapulted to the top of their ‘Most Wanted List’. For example, being able to speak another language can land an MBA graduate a great job speaking with clients in another country. MBA programs prepare individuals to handle corporate culture, provide them with the tools and knowledge necessary to secure higher positions and salaries, and build their drive for success.

From this, the real discussions over MBA programs are internal ones. Many programs are costly, namely in terms of tuition, living costs and time spent getting the degree. Hybrid MBA and online MBA programs are great ways to get over these hurdles as they put the student in charge of their education and are just as reputed as traditional, on-campus programs. There are sacrifices that must be made, but in the end, high starting salaries, respected positions and a lifetime of personal satisfaction makes the investment worth it.

In the world of business it’s not always about what you know, it’s about who you know and who knows you. While hard work generally will allow you make good impressions, developing relationships with others is the best long-term strategy. If you don’t have a solid network of business contacts, it will be very difficult to get ahead. More often than not, knowing the right people will spring you farther than doing everything right.

You should take the time to do whatever is needed to make new connections and get yourself out there. Joining a trade organization is a great way to meet new people and establish yourself among those in your industry. Participating in business-focused groups not only helps you come in contact with others who share your common goals and a common vision for the future, but also enhances your resume because the group falls within your sphere of specialization.

Another great way to establish yourself is to take public speaking or public relations courses. A course like Toastmasters will teach you how to speak in public and gain confidence doing so, while also enabling you to meet other professionals at the same time. Dale Carnegie is also a great course, as you will to learn how to better interact at work and be interacting with colleagues while doing so.

Your current job holds tremendous opportunity for you to go out and meet other people. Everyday, you are surrounded by people who can help you get ahead in your career. Take the time to meet the people you work with and get to know who they really are — beyond simply learning their names. It will allow you to work better with your co-workers now and leave a big impression on them for the future. You never know when a colleague might become a manager somewhere else and might enlist your services to be apart of their team.

What about the Internet for networking? Not only can you use social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook build your identity, but you can also take classes online as well. This can work out for you because your online courses can originate from anywhere and allow you to interact with people from all over the country, perhaps the world. This is a great networking opportunity while you enhance your skills and improve your resume.

Your career will be your legacy, so take the time to make it the best it possibly can be. Make as many connections as possible and put yourself out there on a regular basis. The more people you know, the more doors that will be opened for you down the road.
