Career Planning for MBA Grads

June 29th, 2012 No comments

Congratulations on your graduation from an MBA program! You should be very proud of yourself. Not to spoil the fun, but now is the time to find a job. But as you start looking for one, here are some helpful tips that will definitely benefit you in the long run.

Create a Well-Organized Resume

A resume is a definite need for those searching for employment. Otherwise known as a curriculum vitae, a resume contains your educational background, personal information, projects and organizations attended, seminars conducted, and a reference guide when necessary.

Company Reputation

A famous or globally recognized corporation may give you a better chance of landing that dream job you’ve always kept in the back of your mind. Some of the criteria involving such companies include:

  • Credibility
  • Relationship between Fellow Employees
  • Comfortable Work Environment
  • High Salaries
  • Incentives and other Perks
  • Demeanor of Management

If you belonged to any of the online MBA programs, you are probably already rising high in your current job and have the opportunity to either continue to climb that ladder or move on to a different company and new opportunity. Remember: at the end of the day it’s your life, so do what makes you the happiest.

Your Career Path

Selecting and concentrating on a particular career path may help you land your dream job and maintain focus. Sections derived from online MBA programs include finance, marketing, health care management, global business, business administration and technology management, and help you choose and properly prepare for the career you wish to pursue.

Consult Friends and Family

Higher batch friends and your parents are an important source of wisdom and experience for you to land a dream job, so go heed their advice and use them to your advantage.

Location

Logistical problems may hinder your prospects of searching for the dream job. A company not only has a head office but also has branch offices. Look for one that is closest to your home and practice going to and from the office in order to get used to it. Also don’t be afraid to branch out a little. Now is one of the best times of your life to try something new, live in that place that you’ve always dreamed of; so why not do it?

Competition

You are not the only one competing for one job. You and others graduating from online MBA programs are essentially doing the same thing. So try to be a little aggressive and confident in order to have a best chance of landing it.

Be Positive

Finally, be positive. It will help you land a job when you flash your positive smile and answer questions consistently and spontaneously. Even if you did not land the job, stay confident because the right opportunity will come around eventually.

CalMU Small Business Spotlight: Stone Brewing Co.

June 27th, 2012 No comments

Summer is here! And there’s nothing more fit than to give this week’s CalMU Small Business Spotlight Award to San Diego’s own Stone Brewing Co. They have a long and very interesting story, which started at a music rehearsal studio, moved to a weekend class on the “Sensory Evaluation of Beer” and finally ended up at the establishment of Stone Brewing Co. It is the brainchild of beer-lover and business guru Greg Koch (CEO and co-founder) and beer-enthusiast and master brewer Steve Wagner (President and co-founder).

Greg and Steve met in 1989 in Los Angeles and shared their love for beer. They kept in touch and finally realized they wanted to open their own brewery. Based on Steve’s knowledge in brewery and Greg’s past success in business, they managed to convince some private investors to invest in their project to start a brewery, and on July 26, 1996, the first beer was tapped in the brewery’s tasting room. Their journey soon took off with the production and variety and quality. They are now a thriving craft brewery in the U.S., with 18 beers on tap at all times – more than enough to satisfy the taste buds of even the more nuanced beer aficionados.

They have achieved remarkable milestones in the brewery industry. They have been named one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies by the San Diego Business Journal seven years in a row, and have achieved an annual average growth rate of 43% for the past 15 years. Stone’s revenue has grown by a tremendous 1500% in the last decade. According to Inc.com, their 2002 revenue was $4 million with 41 employees, whereas now their revenue stands at $83 million with 465 employees. Very impressive, to say the least.

Not only dominating the American beer scene, they also are international in scope and distribute their beer and wine to 36 states (plus Washington, DC) and their exports reach as far as the U.K., Sweden, Japan and Singapore.

They are now the 11th largest craft brewery in the nation, and I’m sure you’ve tasted some of their extraordinarily delicious craft brews while out on the town. They have earned many awards and recognitions, including Brewery of the Year and All-time Top Brewery on Planet Earth. Stone also holds honors as America’s Top Brewery Tour and CEO Greg Koch has been knighted by the Belgian Brewers Federation and was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. They have won many Great American Beer Festival medals and have also participated in many Environmental, Sustainable and Philanthropic campaigns. Also recognizing the need to give back to the community, they have also donated millions to charities to help spur social development.

Because of their hard work and continued innovation in the craft beer industry, they are a great role model for students in our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs. Stone Brewing Co., we wish you nothing but continued success in the future and thank you for livening our taste buds when out on a beautiful San Diego night!

California Miramar University Welcomes 6th Cohort of MBA Students in Vietnam

June 25th, 2012 No comments

One of the things we’re most proud of is truly being a world-class educational institution. With our partnership with Vietnam National University’s Center for Systems Development, we are able to offer our online MBA programs to our wonderful students halfway across the globe. This is also one of the biggest benefits of accredited online MBA programs: a global campus that fosters the sharing of ideas and strengthening of partnerships that transcends national borders.

We have may students studying in our online MBA programs in both Vietnam and Kenya, and we are extremely humbled to be able to work with all of these bright minds. In this video, Ms. Virginia E. Palmer, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Hanoi, welcomes our 6th cohort in the country and shares the importance of forming educational partnerships and strengthening diplomatic ties.

Transcript of the Video

[Applause] Dr. Phạm Quang Hưng, Dr. Dominic Mwenja, Ministry of Education and Training Officials, distinguished guests and students, especially students, it’s my honor this evening to attend your opening ceremony. I want to offer very sincere congratulations as the sixth cohort of MBA students begin their studies here in Vietnam National University’s Center for Systems Development. I must say this is a beautiful facility as well; it’s not like anything I sat in when I went to school.

I would like to begin by offering very sincere congratulations to the talented students who gained admission to this program. I would like to congratulate you Dr. Mwenja and Dr. Hưng for designing this very innovative and important program. The launching of this sixth cohort of the MBA program is quite an achievement. The program has already trained hundreds of students and contributed greatly for Vietnam’s economic development. Last year, the United States was the largest investor in Vietnam, something we’re very proud of. We will remain Vietnam’s closest economic partner, and to keep that positive growth going, Vietnam will need even more business leaders who understand how to operate in an increasingly global business environment. So that means all of you, and I know there will be American companies lined up outside your door when you graduate.

As many of you know the Embassy and the National College have made education and encouraged bilateral, economic and education ties a priority. We believe that educational exchange is not only an effective method to gain new knowledge, but also to bring our two countries closer together. Today’s occasion comes at an important time for the United States and Vietnam as well, as we get ready to celebrate the 15th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. It took a long time to get to the point where we have formal diplomatic relations, but before we did, the educational exchanges and people-to-people exchanges really laid the foundation for our growing friendship. So with that experience, I know that your experience and these kinds of exchanges will build an even more important foundation for our two countries as we move forward in the future.

With Vietnam National University and the Ministry of Education and Training and the Embassy working together on these partnerships, I am confident that we’ll go from strength to strength. In the past few years, the number of Vietnamese students studying in the United States has nearly tripled. No I have to advertise; that’s in part because institutions like California Miramar are world-class educational institutions and you get a world-class education in the United States.

And in addition to sort of those high educational standards, I think students who study in American style programs learn very important critical thinking and innovation skills. So I hope the number of Vietnamese students studying in the United States continues to grow, but I also know that it’s not practical for everybody who wants that kind of high standard of education to go all the way to the United States. I know that many of you business students have families and employers who will be very happy that you are able to continue that kind of high standard program here in Vietnam. I think it’s also important to acknowledge that students with the [inaudible] standard C English pass participate really fully in programs like this and make great contributions to the business and the MBA programs as they go along.

There is one additional advantage that this program offers that I’d like to highlight: that is that Dr. Mwenja has secured the rights to a number of business textbooks that will be translated into Vietnamese to support the classes that’ll be starting soon. I can imagine how difficult it would be to study these complex and evolving topics in a foreign language. So I think having those Vietnamese texts will be enormously helpful. This project ensures that Vietnamese and American students are doing the same kinds of knowledge transfers and receiving the same skills and expertise to make them successful.

Before I conclude, I would like to offer one big challenge to all of you. It’s designed to make you successful business managers. Often the measure of that success will be your company’s bottomline. But as you pursue that very important bottomline, I hope you will remember the important contributions that your companies can make as they pursue corporate social responsibility. I hope you can take the lessons you learn in this MBA program to build stronger, more ethical companies that make a great contribution to your society and your economy. So I again offer my very sincere congratulations as you begin this exciting program. Thank you VNU, thank you California Miramar, and good luck to all of you as you pursue this exciting course of studying. Thank you very much. [Applause]

CalMU Small Business Spotlight: Cali Bamboo

June 20th, 2012 No comments

This week we at California Miramar University have chosen San Diego’s own Cali Bamboo for our Small Business Spotlight Award. Not only have they created a unique and successful business that has skyrocketed in the past 4 years; they also endeavor to make a true difference in the future of our planet.

Cali Bamboo manufactures green building materials for residential and commercial projects made primarily from bamboo, one of the most sustainable, renewable and strongest materials. With its aesthetically pleasing and chic bamboo-based designs, they have captured a segment of the construction and remodeling markets because most people turn to wood for their homes and offices. However, because of bamboo’s durability and how it can turn the simplest of buildings into modern, ultra cool works of art, Cali Bamboo has been very successful in evoking a sense of imagination and creativity in people when designing their homes.

The company is the brainchild of two friends – Jeff Goldberg and Tanner Haigwood. They started in 2004 with one vision and one delivery van, and they grew much faster than expected. From fencing they moved on to flooring, plywood, paneling and composite decking. Evidence of their tremendous growth is their listing for the third consecutive year in Inc.com’s 500 fastest growing private companies, and has also been named one of the fastest growing companies in San Diego by the San Diego Business Journal.

Their business operations don’t just stop at revolutionizing homes and offices and protecting the environment; they are also into social welfare. They have joined the 1% For The Planet movement, donating 1% of their sales to myriad environmental organizations around the world. They have also helped raise $50,000 for theSurfrider Foundation, dedicated to protecting our oceans; they’ve donated bamboo plywood to build art displays for a Costa Mesa group home and to build skateboard ramps for the Boys and Girls Club in Anaheim; and they’ve donated materials to the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and a Habitat for Humanity construction project in El Cajon, to name a few. Seriously? How are they THIS amazing?

Cali Bamboo’s Jeff Goldberg was named the Most Admired CEO by the SDBJ, and both founders won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneurs of the Year Award in 2009. According to Inc.com,the company has seen 149% growth in the last 3 years. Its 2010 revenues stand at $11.3 million, compared to $4.5 million in 2007. They have a hard working and socially conscious team of 25 employees to help make the world a greener and better place to live.

Thank you Cali Bamboo for being such a great role model for students in our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs. We wish you nothing but continued success, and are very proud to give you our CalMU Small Business Spotlight Award.

June 15th, 2012 No comments

Do you hear that? Yep, it’s the wonderful sound of summer in San Diego! The food tastes better, the ocean is warmer, the city is more relaxed and it’s time for all of us to put on our exploration caps and try new things around the city. So to get your creative juices flowing, here are some of the top activities to indulge in San Diego this summer.

San Diego County Fair

It opened last week and running until July 4, this year’s San Diego County Fair is truly an out of this world experience. With its interstellar theme this year, the fair will be hosting several international musical artists, including Switchfoot, Joan Sebastian, Hot Chelle Rae, Grand Funk Railroad, Credence Clearwater Revisited, KC and the Sunshine Band, Train, Matisyahu and Weird Al Yankovic.

Other exiting events include the International Beer Festival, Demolition Derby, Southern California’s Best Dance Crew, several prominent comedians, a Monster Truck rally and much more. So head to Del Mar for some great eats, fun rides and a night that is sure to be a blast.

Mission: Beach

No summer is complete without a day spent at the very lively Mission Beach. With some of San Diego’s tastiest gastric staples, miles of beautiful coastline and Sea World nearby, Mission Beach is one of the best summer hangouts in the city. And don’t forget to go to Belmont Park located on the beach boardwalk – the Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster is a must ride!

Knott’s Soak City Water Park

While the beaches are beautiful and the waves fun to board, sometimes you just need to feel the rush of adrenaline that amusement parks can provide. And during the summer, what better amusement park is there than a water park?! Cool off from the hot San Diego sun and enjoy a day rushing down water slides and relaxing in the lazy Sunset River.

No San Diego Summer is Complete Without La Jolla

La Jolla is undeniably one of San Diego’s most picturesque and relaxing locations, with a beach town rustic vibe that is seriously too good to be true. Whether it’s strolling the town for some shopping and eating, or hiking the gorgeous Razor Point and Yucca Point Trails at Torrey Pines State Reserve, La Jolla is the perfect little getaway that will definitely leave you in a state of complete relaxation.

And you know what makes our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs so great? You can enjoy these activities all year because San Diego is your campus. Head down to the beach, nestle your toes in the warm sand and study for your classes; or head to a beachfront restaurant, enjoy the culinary genius that so many San Diego restaurants provide and make that your learning environment.

Whatever it may be, summers in San Diego are priceless, which is why people from all across the globe come here on vacation every year.

How to Use YouTube for Successful Social Media Marketing

June 11th, 2012 No comments

YouTube is a very powerful content community, arguably the most powerful on the Web. Aside from being the 2nd largest search engine – ahead of both Yahoo and Bing – it is also one of the go-to networks for sharing ideas and information. Here are some statistics from YouTube:

    • 60 hours of video are uploaded each minute
    • 1 hour of video is uploaded each second
    • More than 4 billion videos are watched everyday
    • More than 800 unique visitors visit the network every month

Pretty incredible, right? While it’s magnanimous in scope and daily visits, it is a very powerful social media marketing tool and one that needs to be utilized by all businesses, regardless of size and type. Whether including tutorials of how to do miscellaneous tasks related to your business, creating and posting videos about your business or running unique ad campaigns that encourage sharing, all businesses have one main goal in their YouTube social media campaigns: going viral.

This is a snippet of Secrets and Strategies for Successful Social Media Marketing, a seminar hosted by our Director of Marketing Ilana Herring, M.B.A last year.

Transcription of the Lesson

Strategy # 3. Okay, so has everyone been on YouTube? It’s a video sharing site. It is the second largest search engine – I don’t mean video search engine – I mean search engine; like, it’s under Google in terms of search engines. People spend a lot of time on YouTube. It’s like more popular than Yahoo or Bing or any of the other search engines. So, people spend a lot of time on videos [laughter]. Okay, we know that.

According to comScore, it draws about 40 percent of all online video visits. There are a lot of video sites. If you’re really into posting videos, there are some ways to get your videos on all these different sites. YouTube is the most important because it’s the biggest, and everyone picks up YouTube videos. So put your videos on YouTube, make a business account if you don’t already have one and load your videos up on to there when you do videos.

Videos are great, but remember that the most important thing about your – not most – one of the most important things about your video is your title. So make sure you put your keywords in your title. So if you did, the first one is ‘How to Photograph Pets’ and the third one is ‘Amazing Pet Photography’. Right? People are putting their keyword in; I don’t know if they’re conscious of that, but when I put pet photography, six thousand a hundred and seventy results came up, and the ones that were using the terms, and of course the ones that had a lot of views were coming up.

And then you’re going to use your video content everywhere else. One of my biggest rules of thumb for social media is repurposing your own content. So when you make something, don’t just put it on Facebook, or don’t just put it on your blog or don’t just put it one place; put it everywhere that you can. So like, have a list, and keep your passwords there, and then go, ‘Okay, my YouTube video is ready, I’m going to put this on my blog and you can put your videos on Facebook; you can put them lots of places.

Get an Online Business Degree to Increase Your Income

June 8th, 2012 No comments

Online Business Degree at CalMU

Are you considering pursuing a Masters in Business Administration? Have you considered the advantages of earning an online business degree? There are many good reasons to move forward with your dreams, not least of which is that you can earn an average of 50% more than you are earning today with your bachelor’s degree. That is the average, and it can certainly increase from there.

Many companies consider an MBA to be an essential minimum requirement for entry-level management positions. Your dream may actually be a necessity if you want to move forward in your career. Job prospects for MBAs have increased 24% in the U.S., and 36% worldwide. And in 2011 the average salary for a person who had earned an MBA was $92,000. In some major cities that figure even increases to $102,869.

Why earn a degree online? Online MBA programs have many advantages. The most obvious benefit is the flexibility. Leaving a job is not necessary with accredited online MBA programs, and more often than not schooling can work around life events. While brick and mortar schools do offer night and weekend classes, it is still not nearly as flexible as working on your own computer at home. The need for commuting to school is eliminated and thereby so are gas expenses and the need to buy a new wardrobe for class.

Another major benefit of earning an online MBA is that you can search nationwide for a program from any location; there are no geographic limits when exploring online MBA programs. You can find online programs that fit your needs and match your budget requirements. When thinking about this, also consider the savings in transportation, childcare, parking, and even sometimes, housing.

There are other reasons besides financial for earning an online business degree. An MBA is a great way to change careers. It can be a very valuable means of moving into a management position, and is also extremely useful for entrepreneurs – often investors will look for an MBA when considering companies.

Carefully research accredited online MBA programs and choose the one that is right for you and your outlook and prospects will soar. And as one of the top 10 MBA programs in San Diego as rated by the San Diego Business Journal, with very affordable tuition, you should definitely consider us here at California Miramar University and let us know if you have any questions.

CalMU Small Business Spotlight: Active Network

June 6th, 2012 No comments

This week we are awarding the California Miramar Small Business Spotlight to San Diego’s own Active Network. Active Network is a technology and media company that is essentially grounded in event and facilities management. They put registrations for recreational and/or cultural activities on the cloud, thus simplifying the registration process for consumers and expanding the participation of the events.

They started their first chapter of their success story in 1998 in a small office with less than 50 employees. But because they have built software that has made it much easier and more convenient to organize events and activities, today Active Network has grown to a team of 2,917 employees touching millions of people around the world.

Besides the U.S., the company has a strong presence in Austria, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Singapore, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. Led by CEO Dave Alberga and President Matt Landa, Active has acquired many companies till date including Eteamz, LeagueLink, Sierra Digital Inc, Myteam.com and Class Software, to name a few.

On May 25, 2011, Active Network went public on the New York Stock
Exchange, a major milestone for the company. They have achieved remarkable growth of about 300% in last 4 years. Their revenue in 2007 was nearly $102 million, and it catapulted to$270 million in 2010. In 2011, their revenue increased to $337.4 million, marking a 21% increase from 2010 and a nearly 300% increase from 2007, according to Hoovers.

For some more numbers that demonstrate why’ve we’ve chosen them for our CalMU Small Business Spotlight award, let’s take a look at recreational activities in the U.S. Active conducted a survey through Survey.com in 2010, which found that 73& of households surveyed participated in pain recreational/community activities. Based on their internal research, they concluded that their market encompasses over 1.8 million registrations annually in the U.S., which totals more than $110 billion in registration spending. Blow away? Yep, though so.

They are also a very large job provider and they hire from undergraduates to post graduates, very notable for our students in our online MBA programs and Hybrid MBA programs. They are the perfect example of how creating a fun work environment and inspiring employees to keep them motivated will truly foster business success.

Active Network – thank you for creating the ideal business (role) model for future entrepreneurs.
